PostSubject: "Frozen" has a gay agenda?   Sat Mar 15, 2014 8:19 am

So some people are claiming that Disney's Frozen is, apparently, a Trojan Horse that is designed to indoctrinate kids into thinking that being gay is okay.  Really?  This is a thing?

http://wellbehavedmormonwoman.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/movie-frozen-gay-homosexual-agenda.html

...wow, it is.

Personally, I don't see it.  It's a pretty big stretch to claim that a character learning to live with their Ice Magic Power necessarily equals coming out as gay.  People can take such personal messages from it, as they can take from anything, but it doesn't mean it's inscribed into the text in some insidious way.

Think of it this way.... when Star Wars came out in 1978, it's pretty clear what the subtext might have been; being a Jedi was the equivalent of being a hippie, turning away from the militaristic industrial society that turned your dad into a jerk, and going off to get high in the desert with an old 'head and learning about the Magical Mystery Force, maaaaaaan.  However, if Star Wars was released today, I'm sure that some conservative somewhere would claim that it had a gay agenda -- Obi-Wan and Luke are unmarried!  Phallic lightsabers!  Wookiee nights!

Know what the problem is?

Some conservatives are so uncomfortable with gay people that they want them to forever be the Other.  A totally separate race that only appreciates art that is 100% gay, while everything else is 100% straight.  No ambiguity, no crossover.  The simple fact that people of every type could enjoy Frozen as a simple human story disturbs them somehow.

I mean, literally, one of the reasons that writer lists for suspecting Frozen of being something inherently gay is the fact that it has gay fans.  If gay people like it, it must have a hidden core of gayness because why else would they like it?

Gay people?  Enjoying a musical?

Good lord, what is the world coming to.

There are a lot of people on the LEFT as well that claim that Elsa is secretly gay for the same reasons as is mentioned in your link.

People are going to see what they wanna see, be it right wingers and scapegoats or the left and 'models'.

I fear for frozen 2, if and when it ever gets made. No doubt with Elsa's love life exposed.

Frozen 2 would be great, so long as it's not some shitty direct to DVD affair. And yes, I agree, some people probably want to see Elsa as gay because they think it would be a good thing....
... which is, morally, a bit different than what this person is doing. If i said "Ooh, look at that new kid, I think they might be gay, I sure hope so because I would like to date them," that's a bit more acceptable to me than someone saying "Ooh, look at that new kid, I think they might be gay, I sure hope so because then I could beat them up and get everyone else to hate them."

It's splitting hairs, maybe.

I'm generally a proponent of the Death of the Author school of thought when it comes to critiquing media, but this is a classic example if just talking it too far. I'm sure that the movie's message could apply to gay people, but it applies just as much to anyone who has ever had to overcome any difficulty.

Not to mention-- Ye gods, I'm actually gay, and these people are seeing more gay in things than I ever could.

I'm kind of shocked that they're not yelling about Elsa being a "witch" and promoting "witchcraft."  Did Harry Potter burn out their witchcraft boner?

Honestly I can understand her drawing many of the parallels that she included in that write-up, but you could draw those same parallels for so many other subjects. It boils down to what the person is looking for.

For example, you could have this: "Here's a story about a kitten. It loves a ball of yarn, but it's parents want it to hunt instead. It hunts but doesn't enjoy it, and keeps the ball of yarn to play with in secret."

One person would see this as a story of cats. Another person would see this as a story of the young not wanting to grow up. While someone like that blogger would see it as a story with gay parallels about parents trying to make their offspring love what they want, but their offspring not being happy so they keep their real love a secret.

If you're running everything through some paranoia filter, you're going to interpret everything that comes out of that filter as having some sort of link to your paranoia.

A good example of this is the movie "The Croods". That movie is about a family of cavemen who seal themselves in a cave to protect themselves from the danger outside, and who follow the rules outlined on the stone walls. They aren't supposed to think for themselves, only follow those old rules. Then comes along a younger person who has all these new ideas, and only by following this person and embracing the younger people's way of thinking do they manage to survive.

If you run that through the filter you could easily interpret it as a conservative family following old religious rules about how to live, refusing to budge from that mode of thought, and shielding themselves from everything in disagreement. The younger visitor represents the newer generations who don't follow those old religious rules and have opinions that clash with those rules. The disaster representing the old mode of religious thought dying out, essentially saying unless you adopt the younger mode of thought you'll be left behind and die out.

Or you could simply see it as a funny movie about a family of cavemen that encounters a dreamer, leading to cultural clashes as they try to survive on a journey together.

Whatever you look for is what you are going to find. It's only your own interpretation though, and is not necessarily what the creators were thinking when they created it.

Whoever said the movie has a gay agenda must have spent too much time on Tumblr browsing Elsanna art. Let's ask Yamino what she thinks about it. It's a great story about relationships, emotions, and family, all of which centers around two sisters who can kick ass [not just Elsa, I get the feeling Anna could arm wrestle most of her male costars singlehandedly, that girl has some muscle]. Some people are just threatened by anything that doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold of their life and their view of the world.

I've also seen posts by the same kind of people saying that it's "a subtext of homosexuality and bestiality!" I don't even know where they get that one.

Bestiality?

"Reindeers are better than people, Sven don't you think that's true?"

I'm not sure if you know about TJ aka The Amazing Atheist, but he was a pretty good video mocking that little suspicion.

Hm, yes, well, that's even flimsier than the gay thing. Who doesn't love their pet and/or animal companion? You don't see crazy cat ladies hitting the pussy.
